Music Based Programming

 Music Based Programming

Music based programming is what genre of music a radio show wants to play. Radio stations tend to play similar music throughout each show. The different types of media where you would find ‘Media based programming’ or playlists is very large. You can get it on TV channels, radio stations, popular web pages and other popular places. Perhaps places with captive audiences like ASDA with ASDA FM. The Co-Operative radio is an in store radio. It is another well listened to radio as it has a captive audience. They play pop music in the top 100 so that their shoppers/audience will enjoy themselves. By having an in store radio you could give new bands/singers a chance to show people how good they are and to give them a chance in the music industry

An example of ‘Music Based Programming’ or playlists is on Kiss 100, the morning show with Neev, plays similar ‘oldskool’ music at 11-12 every day and later on in the day at 6 o’clock for 20 minutes there is a another Kisstory slot that has the same playlist as earlier on in the day. For example, their slogan is ‘World Famous Kisstory’ implying that the music that they play is well known around the world and is popular so most of their music is under the genre of ‘pop’. The type of music they play on Kisstory is varied from ‘oldskool’ to modern day pop. This is good because you will get a wide range of ages listening to the show and possibly telling others to listen to it.. The audience for this show are adults as the time they play the music, at 11-12, will be when they are working and for the 20 minute slot at 6 will be for when they are on their way home from work. I think Kisstory is very successful because I know a lot of adults who listen to it and when I go on twitter I always see ‘#Kisstory’ trending in the UK. This shows that a large amount of people listen as they manage to get the show trending in the UK.

Another example is the radio station Heart FM; they have the time tunnel which is on at 9-10 in the morning and 2-3 in the afternoon. The presenters for the morning show are Tom, Nicola and Jack. The afternoon show presenter is Tony Sheppard. Both presenters for each show select a playlist of music all from 1 year and the audience has to text or call in to see if they get the correct year. The type of music the Time Tunnel plays varies from music in the 1970s to music in the 2000s. Having a wide range of music being played is an excellent idea because they will get all different age groups listening in everyday to help support their show. The genre they use is adult contemporary as most of the music they play is for when adults were younger. They also play the music in the times where children will be at school and adults, who listen to the radio, will be listening to it at work. I think the time tunnel is also very successful because you get loads of people wanting to guess the years right and also when I got on twitter I see ‘#Timetunnel’ trending in the UK. This shows that a large amount of people listen as they manage to get the show trending in the UK.

There are internet based playlists such as iTunes radio, Spotify radio, Shoutcast and YouTube. Shoutcast has a massive range in music they play, Classic, Jazz, Country to Hip Hop, R&B and Rap. this means it will attractive all kinds of audiences with different ages and ethnic backgrounds. iTunes Radio is an Internet radio service by Apple Inc. It is supported by ads and plays music any music that you want it to play. Spotify is a commercial music streaming service providing digital rights management-restricted content from record labels including Sony, EMI, Warner Music Group and Universal. Music can be browsed or searched by artist, album, genre, playlist, or record label. Paid "Premium" subscriptions remove advertisements and allow users to download music to listen offline. On computers, a link allows users to purchase selected material via partner retailers. YouTube is a website where you can search any song and you will find it. It is the most used website for music related videos and it is where artists post their new songs.

The benefits of listening to the internet radio is that they can listen to any music they want, anytime and anywhere. This means that when they're out and about they can put it on. If they're in a certain mood then they can be 100% sure that there won't be a song about to be played that will flip their mood.

I think there are lots of benefits of FM radio. You get funny, interesting presenters that play you the music you want to hear, they tell you the news and they have a voice that you could listen to all day.

ASDA in store Radio

How effective is ASDA FM at appealing to its varied target audience through its music schedule?

ASDA Fm is a in-store Radio played to staff and customers. Many other shops have one so it is not unique. The purpose of having an indoor radio is to entertain the customers while shopping and a way to promote their products and helping the customers while they shop.

ASDA FM is very effective when appealing to its varied target audience through its music schedule. After school hours they play Disney-style music for the children when they get dragged into the shop by their parents after school. At night when the children are stereotypically meant to be in bed they play more urban music.

What is ASDA FM and who is the target audience?
ASDA FM is an in-store radio played to a captive audience. Its a captive audience because the shoppers enter the store to shop and whilst they are in there its natural to listen to their surroundings. The target audience are the shoppers and the majority of the shoppers are adults.

What is the purpose of ASDA FM and other in-store radio?
The purpose of ASDA FM and other in-store radios is to advertise their items and tell the shoppers of what offers they can get. They also use it to sell off their products by saying good things about them.

What different music formats/styles/genres does the station play?
The different formats/styles/genres they play range from Disney music-urban music. They play this so that the target audience can be a wider range from when the kids get dragged into the store by their parents after school.

Who might the different formats and genres played appeal to?
The different formats and genres are aimed at specific people specific times. For example at about 3 o'clock they play easy listening Disney music for the kids who get dragged into the store after school and later on in the day they play for urban music like Dizzie Rascal for the parents as this is more modern pop music.

How does the style/genre/format of music change according to who is likely to be in the store?
The music style/genre/format of music changes according to who is in the store for example towards the evening they play more old school/modern day music that parents would listen to on the radio when in the car.

In conclusion, how well do you think ASDA FM are at appealing to the target audience?

In conclusion I think that ASDA FM is very good at appealing to their target audience because they play a wide range of songs. I think that the target audience like the music because they don’t complain and they keep coming back to shop there.

Radio 1 Assessment

I will be evaluating the Radio station, Radio 1.

The radio station is not very good at serving its target audience because the music it plays is from pop-rock. This music genre isn't the most popular so isn't listen to. This means that the moods of the listeners can change drastically from happy and sad/angry.

Teens may not like the all of a sudden change in genre because a lot teens only really like listening to one type of genre so changing genre can change the teens

The music in the playlist are from different genres so if you get listeners that only listen to one genre may not like listening to music out of their comfort zone. Some of the target audience it targets are the age of the ‘Beliebers’ so if they listen to Radio 1 they will lose interest because it is not the music they like listening to. It isn't just the Beliebers that Radio 1 schedule for. They schedule for other fan bases in different genres so a large variety of fans would listen to the radio station but the only flaw about this is that Radio 1 will lose listeners because the certain fans listening to certain music will stop listening.

Radio 1 is based in London so the listeners that live in London will most likely like the music but the further out from London you get the more commercial stations there are which play other genres like pop, dance, R&B like Capital FM and Heart these stations are more likely to pick up listeners aged 15-29 because they play more modern day pop music.

The music format for this station is Contemporary Hits Radio (CHR). This format has been chosen for this age group because it focuses on playing current and recurrent popular music as determined by the Top 40 music charts. It was chosen for the age group of 15-29 because the age they started listening to music properly was in the 2000’s.
