Radio 1 Assessment

I will be evaluating the Radio station, Radio 1.

The radio station is not very good at serving its target audience because the music it plays is from pop-rock. This music genre isn't the most popular so isn't listen to. This means that the moods of the listeners can change drastically from happy and sad/angry.

Teens may not like the all of a sudden change in genre because a lot teens only really like listening to one type of genre so changing genre can change the teens

The music in the playlist are from different genres so if you get listeners that only listen to one genre may not like listening to music out of their comfort zone. Some of the target audience it targets are the age of the ‘Beliebers’ so if they listen to Radio 1 they will lose interest because it is not the music they like listening to. It isn't just the Beliebers that Radio 1 schedule for. They schedule for other fan bases in different genres so a large variety of fans would listen to the radio station but the only flaw about this is that Radio 1 will lose listeners because the certain fans listening to certain music will stop listening.

Radio 1 is based in London so the listeners that live in London will most likely like the music but the further out from London you get the more commercial stations there are which play other genres like pop, dance, R&B like Capital FM and Heart these stations are more likely to pick up listeners aged 15-29 because they play more modern day pop music.

The music format for this station is Contemporary Hits Radio (CHR). This format has been chosen for this age group because it focuses on playing current and recurrent popular music as determined by the Top 40 music charts. It was chosen for the age group of 15-29 because the age they started listening to music properly was in the 2000’s.

A stations format is the type of music it plays. Its format is awarded by Ofcom. Fro example heart fm is a hot adult contemporary playing popular chart music.

An A B C playlists is where singers go to make money and get their music to the top. For example Lady gaga and Katy Perry go straight into the A playlist. Group C on the other hand is where singers have to make their way  to group A. The A playlists songs get played 3-4 times a day. The B playlists songs get played 2 times a day and the C playlist songs get played once a day.

Music scheduling is where music is compiled onto a playlists by a scheduler which is then played by a radio.

The techniques a music scheduler uses are: plays upbeat music after news, plays most popular music during drive time because that is when most people listen to radio, uses hammocking this is where you put a not so popular music in between 2 popular songs.
